She graduated from UBC with a degree in Music in 1977 and later, S.F.U. and Capilano College with a diploma in Fitness Management. Comment: "I have been talking with Maggie and Morrie for the past two years about the present state of the fitness industry in the United States and the lack of “true standardization” for personal trainers compared to physiotherapist and the medical profession. The development of higher standards and regulations for the fitness industry is something in which I strongly believe. It is not only important, but vitally necessary. I am both grateful and excited to work with CFES.  I am looking forward to working with Maggie. She possess the same passion and vision to make a difference in the fitness industry by taking it in a new direction. I firmly believe that my unique background, diverse experience in the industry, and expertise in human movement will help CFES fulfill its mission and achieve its goals."

Eva Stewart-Bindernagel     MN, BSc, BA

Eva is based in Ottawa. She has enjoyed several careers, the longest being in fitness and recreation. She was one of the first certified YMCA fitness instructors (mid 70's) and spent the first fifteen years of her career as an instructor trainer, a group fitness instructor, and a personal trainer in Belgium, Israel and four Canadian provinces. As an officer for the Canadian Naval Reserves, she also conducted fitness training and physical activity programs.

Somewhere along the line, Eva became interested in health promotion and moved into concurrent careers in public health nursing and fitness education. During this time she met Maggie, who invited her into the CFES family as an educator and fitness manual author/editor. She recently completed a Masters in Nursing and now has two additional careers: teaching university nursing students and public health programming/evaluation.

Although Eva can no longer make a living physically teaching fitness, she still combines fitness and health promotion as an educator and advocate. Aside from working out, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, travelling, gardening, walking the dog, and playing bridge. One of her main passions is cheering for the Ottawa Senators. "Go Sens Go!"

Comment: "I've been involved with CFES since 1992 when Maggie contracted me to rewrite the group exercise instructor program and manual.  I thoroughly enjoyed teaching this program in Ottawa before I returned to university to complete a degree in nursing. CFES is an organization with a strong commitment to training fitness professionals to positively influence the health of Canadians through group fitness, personal training and fundamentals of health science. As it transitions to a broader national platform, I am pleased to continue my affiliation with CFES as a member of the Board of Advisors. I am interested in contributing as an educator and developer of national programs for allied health professionals such as nurses and physicians. My other interests include writing, research, evaluation, and policy development for the organization."

Jodie Pickering     MSc, CFES Educator

Jodie has been involved in sports all her life, deciding to make a career of it when she began coaching young kids after she graduated from high-school. She saw first hand how inactive some kids were becoming and wanted to be able to help them make changes to their lifestyles through education and physical activity. Jodie went on to do her undergraduate degree in Kinesiology at the University of Calgary, and her Masters Degree in Exercise Science at California University. She is a Certified Kinesiologist, Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Exercise Physiologist and runs her own training business in Cranbrook, BC.  She currently teaches both the CFES Fitness Knowledge and Weight Training Instructor courses, and is planning to take on the new Personal Trainer course as well. "I love seeing people make positive, healthy changes to their lives and knowing that I had a part in it."

Jodie decided to get involved with CFES because she could see the need for a National Certification.  Having had to change provinces herself she realized how necessary it is to have a certification that is of high quality. Having worked in several gyms she has seen the variation in Trainer and Instructor quality and really believes that there needs to be a new standard set to ensure that clients are getting safe and effective instruction. Jodie is looking forward to the future of CFES, and is excited to be on the Board so she can help them on this journey.

Laura Monica     HFI - ACSM

After being struck down in her 30's by chronic illness, Laura was able to return to teaching fitness classes after gradual healing through prayer and exercise. She began teaching fitness classes at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church in Marietta, GA and now has founded WholyFit, a Christian Mind-Body Fitness certification organization. Once having only a "hard-body" mentality, Laura's thinking about fitness was permanently changed after her experience with illness from a concentration on outward oriented goals to an inward focus on health. Her heart had changed too. She learned compassion through her health struggles and has an emotional connection with her students that transforms Laura's journey through physical weaknesses into her greatest strength.

Laura has been developing Christian fitness programs in churches for two decades. Mind-body exercise is Laura's specialty, but she also is an expert in many Group Exercise formats including but not limited to flexibility training, step (cardio on a platform), strength training in group exercise formats, cardio and strength training group exercise, strength training with resistance equipment/machines, and martial arts group exercise. Ms. Monica now lives in California where she trains Christians to minister through devotional exercise by becoming trained to teach in church and health club environments. Laura has been employed by many health clubs including the YMCA and 24 Hour Fitness, where she was a Mentor Instructor.

Comment: "As a CFES BOA member I seek to contribute my 30 plus years of experience in the fitness industry to CFES because I believe in this organization and its members. In unity with the founders, I believe excellence should be the mark of service which CFES certified fitness professionals offer to the public. I want to help CFES train the coming generation of fitness professionals who will be responsible for bringing the life changing (and even life saving) habit of exercise to a sedentary society in a safe, compassionate and effective way."

In addition to providing instructor training, Lorri continues to engage in her first love – teaching fitness classes in Aqua Fitness, Group Exercise and Personal Training in her community.

Comment: "Being a member of the CFES team has always been easy for me. Over the past 3 decades I’ve seen the trends come and go. I’ve witnessed the standard of care take a back seat to the almighty dollar and I’ve experienced frustration with an apparent lack of accountability and/or responsibility on the part of “leaders” in our field. CFES has always been the exception to these ‘rules’. It’s easy for me to stand in front of a group of new fitness leaders and deliver CFES content because I know that we have not/will not cater to what is ‘trendy’ at the expense of what is in the best interest of our most important resources – our students and our participants. BRAVO!! to CFES for bucking the trends and continuing to stick to what is true and right. THAT’s Leadership!"

Paul Sharp     BHK

Paul Sharp is studying for his Masters degree in Human Kinetics at the University of British Columbia Okanagan. Paul began working with CFES in 2010 to lay the groundwork for the CanActive program. Paul gained hands on experience working as a Personal Trainer as well as a Fitness Instructor for first year Human Kinetics students. Paul was recently awarded the BCRPA student scholarship for his work on the CanActive program and research surrounding childhood obesity. He is actively involved with the City of Kelowna and is currently employed in the Aquatics Division. He played varsity level soccer for 3 years and was awarded men’s soccer player of the year in 2009. Paul hopes to use his knowledge in exercise physiology and community health promotion to develop programs and policies to offset negative health trends within Canada.

Comment: "In congruence with other fitness professionals across Canada, I believe a higher standard for personal training needs to be developed. Current certifications that require academic competence lack extensive practical training while those that have a large practical or ‘hands-on’ component lack adequate physiological understanding. CFES aims to raise the standard of training in BC and across Canada by creating a unified, credible certification with professional support."
