Expect this nationally recognized program to provide
comprehensive information on how to keep yourself and others safely
fit and well.
Since 1989, 1,000's of students across Canada have found CFES
programs and resources learner-friendly, academically credible,
and very practical.
Complete the following steps with simplicity and ease of mind and
gain a solid foundation of fitness education and leadership skills
that will last you a lifetime.
Students who pass the following steps will be prepared to teach
at fitness facilities with confidence and enthusiasm!
Step 1: The Fitness Knowledge Course
Take and pass the CFES-recognized theory course (or its equivalent)
by homestudy (or classroom style where instructors have scheduled
courses). Receive CFES Certificate of Course Completion.
For homestudy informations scroll down past Steps 1-5.
Step 2: The Group Exercise/Weight Training Instructor Courses
Take and pass the CFES-recognized Group Exercise or Weight Training
Instructor course (or its equivalent). Write lesson plans, teach
and pass all class components, and an open book exam. Receive CFES
Certificate of Course Completion.
Step 3: The Apprenticeship Course
This course is highly recommended for anyone needing to consolidate
their instructor skills by teaching longer segments of classes in
front of their peers. Effective feedback will be provided. Additionally,
each student will be paired with an experienced instructor who will
tutor and provide numerous teaching opportunities. It is recommended
that the student teach at least a total of eight hours before taking
the OFC practical assessment.
Step 4: CPR Level A and Standard First Aid Courses
This is a requirement for employment as an instructor in virtually
any facility and is an important component to instructor training.
Step 5: The NFLA Theory Exam and OFC Practical Assessment, Certification
and Membership (Optional)
Gain provincial and national recognition by taking the National
Fitness Theory Exam. OFC charges approximately $125.00 to include
the NFLAC exam, a Practical Assessment of your Instructor skills
and a one-year membership.

How does the Fitness Knowledge Homestudy program work?

phone, fax or mail. Please make cheques or money orders payable
to CFES.
2. Resources are mailed by Canada Post Express the same day you
register.
3. Online supplemental courseware includes: student
resource manual; full color charts, tables, anatomical illustrations
of bones and muscles; animation of skeletal joint actions; demonstrations
of the cardiovascular system; over 100 video clips demonstrating
exercises for strength, endurance and flexibility; and chapter
quizzes.
4. You will be guided through a variety of optional chapter learning
exercises in the Homestudy Program Booklet. All answers to assignments are
in the booklet.

(True and False; Multiple Choice; Fill in the Blanks; Match Up;
Written Answers and Exercise Ideas).
6. During your learning time you are welcome to call toll free
or email your tutor. Normally a student will spend 35 – 50
hours to complete the home study course and open book exam, depending
on their knowledge and experience background.

with required CFES Forms (Record of completion and Program Evaluation
form). Your exam is marked and returned within three weeks after
the receiving. You have one year from registration course date
to complete the program.
8. No one "fails" our program. If you receive 79% or
less on an exam section, we ask you to redo the incorrect questions
and charge a small remarking fee.
9. All successful students receive your marked exam and a nationally
recognized CFES Certificate of Completion.
10. This course qualifies you to write the National Fitness Leadership
(NFLA) Closed Book Fitness Theory Exam available through the OFC
